Webb County, Texas (population 281,878), is seeking a highly qualified and motivated physician to serve as Deputy Medical Examiner for the Webb County Medical Examiner’s Office. This position offers an exceptional opportunity to join a professional forensic pathology team dedicated to serving the citizens of South Texas through high-quality medicolegal death investigation services.
The Deputy Medical Examiner performs forensic autopsies and external examinations, determines cause and manner of death, prepares detailed medico-legal reports, and provides expert testimony in criminal and civil court proceedings. The selected candidate will work collaboratively with law enforcement agencies, attorneys, healthcare professionals, and public officials in support of the county’s public health and criminal justice responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct forensic autopsies and external examinations in accordance with accepted forensic pathology standards.
Determine cause and manner of death through review of medical history, investigative findings, toxicology, histology, and related evidence.
Prepare complete autopsy reports, death certifications, and investigative documentation.
Provide expert testimony in county, state, and federal courts.
Participate in death scene consultations and coordinate with law enforcement and investigative agencies.
Assist with identification of decedents utilizing medical, dental, radiologic, and anthropologic methods, as necessary.
Participate in on-call rotations and respond to emergent medicolegal matters.
Maintain compliance with all applicable Texas statutes, accreditation standards, and office policies.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet or exceed the qualifications for appointment as a Deputy Medical Examiner under Texas law and accepted professional forensic pathology standards, including:
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.
Current license to practice medicine in the State of Texas issued by the Texas Medical Board, or eligibility to obtain Texas licensure prior to employment.
Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency training program in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology
Completion of an accredited fellowship in Forensic Pathology
Board certification or board eligibility in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology through the American Board of Pathology or equivalent osteopathic board.
Demonstrated knowledge of forensic pathology principles, medicolegal death investigation procedures, and evidence documentation.
Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral formats, including courtroom testimony.
Preferred Qualifications
Webb County strongly prefers candidates with:
Three (3) or more years of forensic pathology experience following fellowship training
Experience testifying as an expert witness in criminal proceedings
Experience in an accredited medical examiner or coroner system
Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with grieving families, law enforcement personnel, and community stakeholders
Training and Experience Expectations
Qualified candidates will typically possess:
Four (4) years undergraduate education;
Four (4) years medical school training;
Four (4) years residency training in pathology; and
One (1) year accredited forensic pathology fellowship training.
Accordingly, candidates generally possess a minimum of thirteen (13) years of post-secondary education and clinical training prior to independent forensic pathology practice.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of forensic autopsy procedures, pathology techniques, toxicology, histology, and evidence preservation
Ability to interpret complex medical and investigative information
Ability to prepare accurate and comprehensive reports
Ability to explain technical findings clearly to non-medical audiences
Ability to work in emotionally challenging and high-volume environments
Proficiency with autopsy equipment, digital imaging systems, and related forensic technologies
Compensation and Benefits
The salary for the position is $250,000 to $300,000, DOQ. Webb County offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with qualifications and experience, including:
